Page Speed - why is my page taking so long to load? 90% of it is front end!

What does it mean when someone says "My Site is slow now"? What is page speed? How do you measure it? How can you make it faster? We'll try to answer these questions, provide you with a set of tools to use and explain how this relates to your server load.

We will cover:

- What is page load speed?
- Tools used to measure performance of your pages and site
- Six Key Improvements to make Drupal "run fast"
++ Performance Module settings and how they work
++ Caching - biggest gainer and how to implement Boost
++ Other quick hits: off loading search, tweaking settings & why running crons is important
++ Ask your host about APC and how to make sure its set up correctly
++ Dare we look at the database? Easy changes that will help a lot!

This is based on the presentation I gave at Drupal Con SF http://sf2010.drupal.org/conference/sessions/make-drupal-run-fast-increa...

Why most of your page speed depends on your front end elements

What is page speed and how to measure page speed

This session will orient people on how to get started with Drupal. We're going to leave some time at the end for your QUESTIONS!

We'll address a few methods for installation Drupal including using the Acquia Drupal Stack installers, then dive into some fundamentals such as:

- how does Drupal work (at a very high level)
- how do you begin to build a site. Adding pages, inserting navigation
- how do create roles and grant privileges
- how do you extend Drupal's features (finding and installing modules)
- how do you create ad's or specific call outs on your site
- how can you organize information on a page - like show a list of events
- how do you theme a drupal site.

Questions about this session or dougvann? http://dougvann.com/contact-doug-vann

Using Drupal for Responsive Accessibility & Design

                    kat3_drx

This presentation will focus on the principles of responsive accessibility as they are uniquely suited to Drupal sites, how to incorporate them into Drupal 7 and Drupal 6 sites through the use of contributed modules and themes, and through APIs and coding solutions. This presentation will also detail appropriate levels of accessibility measures for Drupal sites in specific situations, such as higher education sites, e-commerce sites, and personal/professional. Finally, this presentation will provide an overview of how to write an accessibility policy for your Drupal site based on which themes/modules you use, and will provide an update on assistive technologies and software available for disabled users. A short, updated video of disabled users testing several Drupal 7 sites for web accessibility will also be shown.
Presentation Outline

What is Responsive Accessibility, and how is Drupal uniquely suited for it?

Using contributed modules and themes for Responsive Accessibility

Drupal coding for Responsive Accessibility

Designing Responsive Accessibility into desktop and mobile designs

Appropriate levels of web accessibility -- how much is enough for you?

Developing the accessibility policy that's right for your site/development shop

Update on latest assistive technologies and software

Screenreader use video demo, hardware demo of assistive technologies

The path to providing better user experiences on the web is paved with buzzwords and acronyms. Perhaps at the forefront right now is "responsive design." Responsive web design is the principle and practice of designing, building, and coding websites and application interfaces to respond to a user's behaviors and web environment. This refers to screen resolution, user device (mobile vs. desktop), and requirements or limitations dictated by a user's behaviors.
Web accessibility refers to measures taken to ensure that all users, regardless of disabilities, can use the web. Responsive design and web accessibility go hand in hand. Responsive accessibility means a website is designed with accessibility in mind, not just to reach the lowest common denominator, but to craft a personalized, heightened, and enhanced experience for all users. Creating a fair user experience for all is what web accessibility is all about, and responsive accessibility can help us get there more effectively than perhaps any other technique.

What questions will your session answer?:

How is Drupal uniquely suited for Responsive Accessibility?

What are some problems faced by disabled web users of updated websites and applications, including mobile sites, HTML5 interfaces, and Responsive sites?

How do I design with Responsive Accessibility in Drupal to create accessible, flexible experiences on the desktop and on mobile devices?

How is Drupal uniquely suited to assist designers and developers in designing/coding/building web experiences with Responsive Accessibility in mind?

How do I create a good, comprehensive accessibility policy for myself, my site, and/or my development shop, to make my assumed responsibilities clear to users and clients?

Peeling the lid off MySQL

MySQL is a relational database management system that provides state persistence for both the content and configuration of websites built on Drupal. Have you ever wondered what’s going on inside MySQL? This talk will focus on tools and methods to collect and analyze query performance and diagnostic information to find performance problems in the database layer of your application.

What tools are available to peel the lid of my MySQL server?

How can I determine what MySQL is doing?

How can I monitor MySQL performance over time?

Which queries are being run most frequently, what are the most used tables and most active users?

How can I improve query performance?

What questions will your session answer?:

OK. Some ppl hate it and some can't live without it, but sooner or later your clients are going to demand that their text fields have all kinds of CRAZY buttons attached to it so that they can have more control over exactly how their text looks in posts.

How do we accomplish that?

In this session we're going to install WYSIWYG , CKEDITOR , IMCE , PATHOLOGIC , LINKIT, & More

After this session you will be able to:

Install a rich text editor for your users
give them image upload options including resizing
provide file upload options
allow them to link dynamically to pages already on the site
leap tall buildings in single bound [time permitting]
Drupal Hosting - why does it have to be so confusing?

Selecting a host for your Drupal site can be confusing. Shared, VPS, dedicated, managed, unmanaged, - and that's just the beginning.

Let's take a quick look at some of the Drupal hosting options, things you'll need for your Drupal site, and why the pricing can run from $4/month (or even free) up to being, as we sometimes say in my part of the country, really spendy.

We'll talk over different classes of hosting, and some of the web hosting features that may help your site be faster or more reliable.

Bring your hosting questions and problems -- the session will be a short presentation and a Q&A period about hosting.

What questions will your session answer?:

What are the different types of hosting for Drupal?

What can I expect from shared hosting?

When they say "unlimited" do they really mean it?

Caching -- what does it mean for me?

Mobile Web Development with Drupal

Mobile web consumption is on the rise.

In 2010, global mobile data traffic tripled for the third year in a row. Between 2010 and 2015 Cisco predicts that there will be approximately 7.1 billion mobile devices connected to the web (roughly one per person on this planet)
Cisco

By 2014, mobile internet usage is expected to overtake desktop internet usage.
GigaOm: Mary Meeker of Morgan Stanley

Numerous people today already access the internet exclusively on their smartphones and do not own a desktop/laptop machine.

As Drupal developers, designers and themers, it's foolish for us to continue to assume that our work will only be viewed on a laptop or a desktop screen.

Today's website must deliver a tailored experience to the mobile web user that utilizes unique capabilities only available on such a device - geolocation, screen rotation, etc. This experience must be just as flawless as it is on their full size device. The mobile user expects personalization, interactivity and adjustments to his / her context.

**This session is intended for those responsible for creating such experiences: architects, developers, themers and designers.**

What questions will your session answer?:

Managing expectations, dealing with the unexpected, helping shepherd change, managing internal and external resouces, and coping with insane timelines are all part of moving/re-launching large websites.

Follow us as we take a journey through the soft side of huge website launches and everything that goes with them: data migrations, wireframes, change management, expectation management, taxonomy cleanup, and more. We will be wading through strategy, not code.

In the past year we've completely re-built and relaunched: www.bdcnetwork.com, www.housingzone.com, www.constructionequipment.com, www.wwdmag.com, www.roadsbridges.com, www.itnonline.com, www.dicardiology.com and we've got a half dozen more to go.
Bricks: Using ctools efficiently in Drupal 7

              Speaker(s):

                    bangpound

Bricks is a new Drupal project that creates re-usable blocks out of ctools content types. It brings out some of the features more typically associated with Panels into Drupal core. The project itself is useful for site builders who want to create various kinds of ctools-exportable blocks without the overhead of Panels. Panels can be a big commitment especially for builders who aren't familiar with it.

Bricks leverages ctools to offer functionality that previously was primarily available through Panels, so it offers additional examples of how to use ctools features like contexts, content types, access control and export UI in your own work.

Learning ctools is imperative for Drupal coders. Because as a dependency of Views, it's very likely going to be on every Drupal 7 site you work on. If you don't know ctools, you're either writing code you don't need to or missing opportunities to integrate with other fantastic projects like Contextual Administration and Panels.

If you're working in Drupal 6, ctools brings Drupal 7 features to Drupal 6 and is also a helpful bridge that makes upgrading much easier.

This session is 25% builder and 75% coder. When I make a screencast demonstrating Bricks, I'll link it in this proposal and revise the description to focus on coding.

What questions will your session answer?:

What can I use ctools for?

Why should I use ctools as much as possible?

How can I get some of the power of Panels but for a smaller and shorter project?

<fieldset class="fieldgroup group-audience">

Townsquare: Process-driven application development

              Speaker(s):

                    eads

Townsquare is a Drupal 7-based application developed by FreeGeek Chicago that helps community-based organizations manage volunteers, track program participation, and share institutional knowledge and skills.

Townsquare is an alternative to heavy, one-size-fits-all constituent relationship management systems (CRMs) like CiviCRM, Blackbaud products, and Salesforce. Townsquare provides a basic wiki (still in heavy development, about all we've got is an awesome editor) and a powerful volunteer management system.

In this round-table conversation, we'll discuss:

Townsquare past: Years of failure.

Townsquare present: Drupal 7 nirvana (more honestly: "this is actually feasible now for a variety of reasons").

Volunteer manager philosophy: Why don't volunteers self-report hours?

Volunteer manager construction: Overview of how data model and UI are built using entities and Javascript. Omega theme + Less CSS are incredibly powerful.

Managing sensitive information: How does technology define our organizational roles?

TinyMCE + Markdown editor: It rocks.

Townsquare future: Fix up crappy code (I have a 9-5! I did this on the train!), functional install profile, useful wiki based on our extensive note-taking experience, notifications and feedback to volunteers based on FreeGeek Chicago's process, abstracting inline-edit functionality from volunteer manager into generic library, better use of entity API. We need help!

Strategic questions and conversation

Recent Drupal projects: Lots of great stuff! Open Outreach, CityGroups, SpringBoard, Watershed Now, Open Atrium, and the possibly defunct RedHen CRM.

When does it make sense to use a monolithic CRM like CiviCRM? When does it make sense to develop to create a Drupal distribution? When should you consider a framework like Rails or Django?

What are the common barriers to creating Drupal distributions for organization or domain-specific purposes? Should we pursue many small projects with a shared set of best practices (represented by projects like Townsquare and Watershed Now) or contribute to larger efforts like Open Outreach. How should we balance the need for abstraction with the need for domain specific solutions?

How can organizational process inform application design and development methodology? How can non-coders be engaged, effectively contribute to such projects, and articulate their needs? (Watch us fumble in our issue queue!)

David Eads is a Drupal developer whose past work includes development and design for The View From The Ground, contributing to the creation of FreeGeek Chicago. Recent work includes E-Center, a Drupal-based network performance analysis tool for Fermi National Accelerator Lab and Townsquare for FreeGeek Chicago.

Web Application Security Fundamentals

Major websites are losing customer data left and right, and their brands are losing face because of it. Web application security is more important now than ever before, yet very few developers have a solid grasp of the fundamental concepts and theory behind modern security measures.

This interactive presentation will cover many of the building blocks of modern security including encryption, database-level security, server security, session management, input sanitation, and password strength. More complex topics, such as OAuth, cross-site scripting, developer security, cloud hosting, etc. will also be touched on if requested. Ideally, each topic will be a relatively dense 5-minute overview hitting the core theory along with an example or two. Topics will be chosen by audience participation (bring your voices.)

This talk will not be Drupal-specific and while examples will be chosen with Drupal in mind, the topics covered should apply to any web application. Details for the talk will be taken from my experience, Security Now, OWASP, and an assortment of security-focused presentations and papers. The talk will assume little to no prior security knowledge, though we won’t spend much time on anything you already know.

                    Why can’t security be ignored?

What are common attack vectors and vulnerabilities?

The bean module allows the creation of fieldable block entities. Similar to node types, different block entity types can be created with different fields and configurations. This allows your editors to create blocks with the ease of creating a node, without needing to write code or deal with a complex admin.

The session will demonstrate how to create block types, both in code and in UI. The session will also show different ways of using block entities, including the Blockreference module, which allows editors an easy-to-understand way to place blocks within a node, and demonstrate how Beans can be used to provide an alternative method of creating Views-driven blocks.

2013 is 13 months away. In 2013 there will be more mobile devices capable of accessing the web than there will be computers. How do you present your drupal website to your users accessing it from your mobile devices? Drual Eight has a mobile initiative, but Drupal eight is not here now. We need answers and solutions NOW. What are the different ways in which we can accomplish this? This session will cover the five ways in which the problem is being solved now.

	1. m.dot or mobilize.me
2. responsive design
3. JQuery mobile
4. Mobile application

How can we present Drupal content to mobile customers?

What design considerations should we keep in mind

What is the level of effort and complexity in these approaches?

What tools are available now for drupal? (PROMET MOBILE DISTRIBUTIONS)

Introduction to Git

Git is an open source version control system used by a myriad of developers. While it has a relatively steep learning curve, once you figure out how to use it, developing outside of git starts to feel unnatural and foolish.

In order to contribute to the Drupal community, and also to work on your projects, its essential to have a version control system. As the code we deal with becomes more and more complex, Command or Control Z just doesn't do the trick anymore. In addition, collaboration, visibility, and history tracking can all be accomplished using git.

This session is intended for new Drupal developers as well as seasoned ones coming from CVS (the version control Drupal.org used to use).

Dev->Stage->Prod

We will discuss a familiar problem in Drupal: How to effectively take you website development process through Development, Staging, and roll to Production. This includes the essential tools, Drupal best-practices, and process to setup a proven rollout lifecycle. As a team we see the value that these process have created and would like to share what we have learned explicitly.
What’s the value of this practice?
Standardization of:

team-members contributions

review process

staging

rollout

An overview of tools (and their needed features)…
Focusing the use of these tools into your process can be daunting, but there are a couple of great best practices to follow:

Be agile (Scrum is a nice iterative framework)

Be modular (let business functionality drive)

Scrutinize (code review and testing)

Keep an eye on the future (pattern off good work)

Questions answered by this session

How does an organization develop and give back to the Drupal project (and others) effectively?

What are some good examples to pattern work from?

How to speed up your development iterations - in a sane manner?

What are some “protips” that have been discovered along the way?

Oh the things you can do… with an API!

                    akucharski

Most successful companies on the web today from Amazon to Dropbox to Google to Twitter expose some kind of API to their users to write their own applications and interact with their application programmatically. They expose an even deeper API for their internal teams.

Even Dries recognizes the importance of being able to output data in different formats and now Drupal has an awesome
Web Services and Context Core Initiative

With Drupal, your site doesn't have to be big, or small, or even cool to have an API. It just has to be running Drupal! (So by definition it would be cool anyways).

In this session we'll delve into a discussion of APIs built using the Services Module. We'll talk about how internal APIs can be leveraged to transform your website into an SOA application and how external APIs can bring more adoption and flexibility to your online application. We'll talk about the definition of a true RESTful API and how to design your APIs to conform to those principles as well as the business logic of your website.

Also a hidden easter egg, we'll talk about how you can document it while typing minimal documentation.

Finally, at the end, we'll talk about the structure of the services module and how it works on the inside and at the end of the session we'll take a look at how to define your APIs in code!

What questions will your session answer?:

Why do I even need / want an API?

How do I design an API to comply with my business logic and RESTful Principles?

How do I successfuly leverage APIs internally in my web application?

How do I make the people developing on my external API want to develop on my external API?

How do I actually code a services API?

Creating Communities and Social Networks with Drupal

                    msilverman@duoc...

Everyone loves social networks but not the associated “noise.” Learn about opportunities to capture your own community (using Drupal). During this talk Michael will review key concepts in designing, maintaining and promoting communities online; including a project recently completed for Bloomberg Media.

Did you know that Drupal is a great tool for building social networks? Many options are available such as building with a collection of popular modules, using Commons, or going totally custom. Matthew's section will cover all three building options to help you realize every project is special.

Users, profiles, friends, groups, searching, and status walls: oh the fun you will have. You may have even heard clients already ask..."Can my website do X just like Facebook and LinkedIn?" Presentation will cover a brief history of social networking compared to Drupal's history. We will observe a comparison in thoughts of our community and how to build interactive collaborations. Many people ask me, "why build something Facebook and LinkedIn already provide?". Because FB and LI provide a specific purpose. Example Facebook is a great place for family to stay connected and drunk friend pictures. LinkedIn is a great place to have recruiter find your resume. However, we will continue to see a trend in niche businesses which need to embrace social networks. Social business is here and it is changing they way we work on a daily basis. Not to mention utilizing Drupal's awesome ability to manage multilingual-social-networks.

Topics will be fairly high level and understandable by all skill levels from new users to business managers. Most technical aspect will be bragging about Drupal's ability to easily scale high availability hosting. Plus mention of cache issues for content that is completely authenticated (all social networks).

What questions will your session answer?:

How can you break through the ‘noise’ of Facebook to engage target audiences on a more human level?

What are best practices for creating online communities?

What is ‘Social Capital’ and how can it be used to help drive engagement?

What are the key technical elements of online communities and how does Acquia Commons fit in?

Why should association managers look closer at online communities?
